Content licensing

Last updated 25 June 2026 · OpenGlyph Editorial

OpenGlyph exists to keep glyphs open. This page states, plainly, how content on OpenGlyph.org is licensed and what you may do with it. It’s a summary in plain language, not legal advice — always read the specific license that ships with anything you reuse.

Open by default

Wherever we can, content is shared under an open license so anyone can reuse it. Different kinds of content use the license that fits them best.

Kaomoji, symbols & text

Kaomoji and most symbol/glyph entries are built from standard Unicode characters, which are not themselves copyrightable. The surrounding curation, descriptions and community text are shared under Creative Commons — attribute OpenGlyph and the original contributor when you reuse it.

Fonts (SIL OFL)

Fonts in our directory are distributed under their own licenses, most commonly the SIL Open Font License. The OFL lets you use a font anywhere (including commercially), bundle it in products, and modify it — with two key conditions: don’t sell the font on its own, and don’t reuse its Reserved Font Name on a modified version.

OFL vs Creative Commons

The two licenses cover different things. Use this quick comparison, then read the full text before relying on either.

Your submissions

When you contribute, you keep credit and the rights to your work, and you grant OpenGlyph an open license to display, adapt and share it under the terms above. See how to contribute for the full submission flow.

Trademarks

Licensing covers text and fonts — not brands. Emoji artwork and platform/game names are trademarks of their respective owners; OpenGlyph is independent (non-affiliation & trademarks).
