The crying emoji, explained

Loudly-crying vs slightly-frowning-with-tear: meanings, origins and how each platform draws them.

😭 featured-image · the-crying-emoji-explained

Two “crying” emoji get mixed up constantly: 😭 Loudly Crying Face (U+1F62D) and 😢 Crying Face (U+1F622). They mean different things.

Loudly crying — overwhelmed, not always sad

😭 streams tears from both eyes. Online it’s rarely literal grief; it signals being overwhelmed — by laughter, secondhand embarrassment, or something almost unbearably cute.

A single tear — genuine sadness

😢 shows one tear and a downturned mouth. It reads as sincere disappointment or sympathy, softer and more serious than its louder sibling.

It looks different everywhere

Because vendors draw their own art, the same code point varies: tear placement, eyebrow angle and mouth shape all shift between Apple, Google and Samsung — occasionally changing the tone entirely.

Tip: when nuance matters, pair the emoji with a word or two. The picture sets the mood; the text removes the ambiguity.
